“The clouds were building up now for the trade wind and he looked ahead and saw a flight of wild ducks etching themselves against the sky over the water, then blurring, then etching again and he knew no man was ever alone on the sea.”
― Ernest Hemingway (The Old Man and the Sea)
Our location at Abell Point Marina couldn’t be more perfect for the restaurant named after the literary great, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway loved the ocean, he was an avid fisherman and particularly game fishing, which he enjoyed extensively over the years during his time in Europe, Florida and Cuba.
There is something incredibly satisfying about sitting back with a cold drink and a good meal, whilst overlooking the water and a stunning array of yachts. Hemingway often spoke about his love of being around boats. He himself had a boat the, Pilar, which is used regularly for fishing trips and to get away and relax whilst finding inspiration for his next novel.
At Hemingway’s our outdoor dining space has unrivaled views over the marina, the Coral Sea and the Whitsunday islands. Guaranteed incredible sunsets and as the sun fades into night, the twinkle of the yacht lights and the stars above provide an elegant and natural backdrop for Hemingway’s customers. The ambiance created by the location on the waterfront is both relaxing and sophisticated and with the weather in the Whitsundays being consistently great, sitting out under the stars enjoying a great meal is exactly what we can offer.
Conversely, Hemingway enjoyed the hustle and bustle of a busy port. Watching how people interact, get on with their daily business was a source of creative inspiration for him and he often wove those observations into his writing. The same can be said for Abell Point Marina, in so much as it is an incredible place to people watch. With thousands of locals and visitors passing through the marina weekly, cruise ships docking, day trips boarding, jet skis buzzing around, there is plenty to sit back and watch. Come down at lunch time, enjoy one of our lighter meals and a couple of hours of soaking up the ambiance and atmosphere of our marina surrounds.
